Zumaia

Getaria

In the nearest coast of Gipuzkoa (San Sebastian capital city) there are towns with beaches and sea atmosphere. Getaria and Zarautz are very well-known because of their beaches, their gastronomical delights (we can not forget the "Txakoli" and fish from Getaria) and summer atmosphere. We must say the same thing about Zumaia and Deba. These towns also shape an interesting artistic route (gothic churches and palaces, flemish paintings, museums like Zuloaga). In Zumaia, it makes stand out the geological values of its cliffs.Farther away we can find the coastal towns of Pasajes San Juan and Hondarribia, in the frontier of France. Both towns are full of spell, with ancient houses and sea arquitecture. Into the countryside, first of all we find Azpeitia, the place where is located the Baroque Sanctuary of Loiola, and Oñati, monumental village that is made to stand out by its renacentist University and the Sanctuary of Aranzazu, where artists like Oteiza and Chillida operated. Other countryside towns to visit are Regil (maybe the most typical image of the countryside), Tolosa and Bergara.

In Bizkaia territory (Bilbao capital city), the Biosphere Reserve of Urdaibai stands out. This is one of principal European refuges for migratory birds. It is the place where Oka river´ss waters meet with Cantabric sea´s salty waters. That is the reason for the fauna and flora diversity. But in Urdaibai Gernika is located, too. A city with profound significance for Basque people. Old Basque institutions always met here. Near work of arts of Chillida and Henry Moore is located the "Council House" sheltering the "Gernika Tree", Basque people’s symbol. Near Gernika, Mundaka village, famous around the world for its waves. Mundaka is a surfers´ favourite meeting point. Mundaka has one of the many beaches of the zone, Laida and Laga are the most beautiful and well known. And continuing by the coast of Bizkaia we arrive at San Juan of Gaztelugatxe, Bakio, Mutriku, Bermeo, Ea and Elantxobe...

Araba (Gasteiz capital city) is an interior territory and a change in landscape with respect to Gipuzkoa and Bizkaia. In the north side, a reservoir zone constitutes a leisure place for summer and a beautiful landscape. In those lands there is a profound footprint of history. There are many Romanesque churches (Armentia, Gazeo, Santa María de Laguardia) and towns that seem stopped in time. In the south we find the Rioja Alavesa, world-famous Rioja wine production area. The centre of this area is Laguardia or Biasteri, a place full of wine cellars and medieval flavour. Near the old city walls, the prehistoric deposit of La Hoya and many dolmens. There are many Natural Areas, but Valderejo Park stands out from them, and the gorge of Puron river.
