The small Sastarrain Valley.

It is 1,7Km from Zestoa to Sastarrain. The valley, which has the same name, is longer, and it finishes at the old mills of Agitta. This valley was inhabited in the old prehistory. In various caves that composed the group of Ekain, remains of ancient inhabitants have been discovered, and also bear skeletons, because they used caves to stay in winter. Ekain II, in front of the farm, is the most spectacullar of all, with cave painting of magdaleniense period (see Ekain page). In the historical period, during the Middle Ages, Zestoa village was founded, in 1383. In the valley entrance, in the same period, Lili palace was built. A gothic palace complete with stone adornments, the oldest closed house of Lilibea, the mills and the smaller and bigger iron factories. From those old iron factories, the high dam of the second one is preserved, close to the road that goes to the farm school.

Zestoa and the municipality

The village and its municipality constitute a kind environment where is possible to have pleasant walks, which are full of interesting historical, natural and landscape elements. In our way, we will find religious architecture (churches of Zestoa and Aizarna –XVI century- and so many hermitages), civil architecture (Lili and Alzolaras palaces), popular (country houses of Akua, Aizarna and Alzolaras), industrial (old iron factories of Alzolaras...)... We emphasize the hermitage of Santa Engracia because of its antiquity and location, and the village of Aizarna, an accurate reflection of rural environment of Gipuzkoa. Woodlands of oaks, beech trees, holms, pasture fields and clean streams surround the roads that guide our walks.
